During a festival day in a small Spanish town, a dancer finds herself between two friends that equally desire her. Amused and indifferent, she submits the idea of a duel to decide between them, while she points her attention elsewhere. The film is an excellent example of impressionistic style by the great Germaine Dulac, with its accelerating rhythm of movement and editing.
Germaine Dulac (1882-1942) was a pioneer French director, cinema theorist, journalist and feminist. A cultivated person, passionate about music and photography and collaborating in feminist magazines, in the 20s she became the heart of the avant-garde French impressionism in film. However, her “visual symphonies” were often misunderstood by the public. She moved away from directing in 1928, to occupy until upon her death the post of Deputy Director of Gaumont News.
