The film is about a poor English teacher who tutors the daughter of a nouveau riche family and flirts with both the daughter and her mother. It could be considered as the first feature film of the New Greek Cinema, as it managed to capture in a Godard-style the underlying conflict between the bourgeoisie and the graduates of the lower middle class, who had few outlets, other than emigration, to be able to realize their ambitions. Athens was now turning into a modern megalopolis and the symbols of modernism were contrasted with the melancholy of its protagonist. The effects of post-war urbanisation can also be traced in Portuguese cinema in Rocha's innovative work The Green Years. Manthoulis also incorporated documentaries from the mobilizations against the so-called "royal coup" that led to the resignation of the elected Prime Minister George Papandreou, setting the stage for the overthrow of the parliamentary majority.
