Growing up in a provincial community on the outskirts of Rimini, the adolescent Titta, inspired by a childhood friend of Fellini’s—but also himself—struggles to advance in his emotional education. In the cycle of a year’s four seasons, the experiences of a life suspended between the dire straits of Catholic superstitions and the ridiculous rituals of the Mussolini dictatorship, restrain Titta, as well as his eccentric relatives and fellow villagers, in a carnival of sexual fantasies and adventures—which no one can say for certain—if he really lived them or dreamt them with eyes wide open. Not even the viewer, who is immersed in the deepest, most mature and hedonistic, Felliniesque ceremony on recollections of lost youth.
