The son, Stefanos Stratigos, the friend, Vasilis Avlonitis and the orphan fiancée, Antigoni Valakou, are mourning at the humble gravestone of the old carriage driver. Summary Mr. Anestis, an old coachman, doesn’t want to change professions, even though cars now rule the road. He lives together with an orphan girl, Annoula, who was the beloved of a boy named Nikos, who had to leave her for work abroad. Mr. Anestis is forced to sell his carriage and, with pain in his heart, goes out into the streets to sell cigarettes from a small suitcase, a change that he cannot endure. He collapses and dies. Nevertheless, life goes on; Nikos returns to Annoula, and they get married. Together they visit the cemetery to say goodbye to the old coachman, who left this world broken and bitter.
