RECONSTRUCTING

A migrant worker in Germany returns home to a half-deserted mountain village in Epirus. His wife, Eleni, with the help of her lover, the local constable, kills him. The perpetrators are arrested, and as the questioning proceeds the time comes for the reconstruction of the scene of the crime. The act is never shown in the film. The judicial authorities, the Gendarmerie and a film crew accompanied by journalists try to recreate the exact scene. The entire handling of the issue leads to a reflection on such reconstruction, especially by film, where its completeness is placed in doubt in relation to facts and causes. From this point of view, responsibility for a crime is not only born by the specific individuals who commit the crime, but by the conditions that led to it as well. The editing of the film is non-linear and presents the issue through a syllogistic process. This is one of the landmark films which, from the independent filmmaker’s point of view, formed the historic phenomenon of the New Greek Cinema.
