IPHIGENIA

After the kidnapping of the Queen of Sparta, Helen, the Greek kings decide to take revenge on behalf of her husband Menelaos (Kostas Karras), who was mortally offended by this incident. Under the command of Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, (Kostas Kazakos), one thousand ships gathered at Aulis ready to set sail for Troy. However, departure is impossible due to unfavorable winds. Agamemnon faces the danger of starvation and mutiny among his men and attempts to counter the ambitions of the powerful seer Calchas by killing his holy animals in a desperate attempt to demonstrate his power. Calchas returns the attack using the only power at his disposal – the word of the gods. He prophesies that a fair wind will blow only if the commander-in-chief sacrifices his daughter. Agamemnon is now trapped by his ambitions, and, in order to gain time, he calls Iphigenia (Tatiana Papamoschou) to come to Aulis on the excuse that he wants her to marry Achilles. Clytemnestra (Irene Papas), despite her husband’s orders to the contrary, accompanies her daughter and realizes the dreadful truth. Entreaties by both mother and daughter have no effect on Agamemnon’s decision, and Iphigenia is led to the altar. However, as she slowly dies, a fair wind begins to blow, and the ships ready their sails.
