Credits (and a note that the film is based on Shakespeare's eponymous stage play)
It says in the programme that MACBETH had been a life-long dream come true for Orson Welles, "the great director whose anti-conformism shook up Hollywood's status quo": his ambition to make a Shakespeare's play into a film. Actually, he was fortunate enough to realize this dream two more times, with Othello and Falstaff. The brutality of Welles' hero, far removed from the performance on stage, with the impressive costumes of the period and cardboard décor received mixed reviews, as it was both praised and frowned upon. It is noted that Cocteau exalted the film, which as a result became a big success in France.
The programme concludes with reference to Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD (1957), which is also based on the Shakespeare's play and was influenced by Welles' production and Noh, a genre of Japanese stage drama.
