The notes begin by presenting the plot of the film: an American newspaper assigns a cynical reporter a mission to Europe in 1938. Nevertheless, after an impressive spy chase, his cynicism abandons him, and he asks his employer permission to stay in Europe in order to take part in the fight against Hitler. This film, probably Hitchcock’s most propagandistic, is the first Hollywood blockbuster with scenes that are considered classics in the history of cinema. The programme also refers to the difficulty that he had as a director in finding a leading actor, since Gary Cooper, who was his first choice, rejected the role, and, as a result, was replaced by Joel McCrea. The latter, even though he wasn’t on Hollywood’s A-list, created an amazing hero. The film included several extraordinary special effects.
