Luis Bunuel's "TRISTANA" is an adaptation of Benito Perez Carloz's novel and is set in a petite bourgeoisie society of a Spanish town in the province of Toledo. Title heroine TRISTANA, an orphan girl who lives with her strict guardian, falls in love with a young painter and is confronted with authoritarianism and Catholicism. Catherine Deneuve, the "woman-enigma"and Bunuel's muse, stars in this film as she did in "BEAUTY OF THE DAY" (1966). It is noted that in both films, Bunuel "gives prominence to eroticism and condemns social conventions".
