Nikita Mikhalkov’s film "LIAR SUN", based on a story from his life, is set in a Soviet province, in the hot summer of 1936. The idyllic, serene countryside and tranquillity of the people that work the land give the impression of apparent innocence, which turns out to be an illusion. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that the social and political reforms in Stalin's time left a lasting imprint on the personal and family relations between members of society. It is stressed that the director seems to indulge in recurring flashbacks to periods in history that left an indelible mark on his country. The note also praises the lighting effects and the remarkable rendering of the atmosphere in the countryside. This bitter comedy won an Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
