The film is a free adaptation from Chekhov's youth play, "Platonov": describes the meeting of twelve rich bourgeois in a summer house. Mikhalkov gives an excellent representation of the time and of the people, but parallel to this he reveals a Chekhov who is acrid, bitter, ruthless. In fact, through the dominance of the dramatic intensities and constant alternations from tragedy to farce, the Chekhovian cry and laugh is highlighted in a film exemplary of a movie adaptation. The basis of the film is the love of Mikhail Platonov for Sophia, daughter in law of the hostess that has them as guests in her house, and the references to the past and the present.
