ΚΙΝΗΜΑΤΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΗ ΛΕΣΧΗ ΠΥΡΓΟΥ - -

Program of the Pyrgos Cinema Club, a branch of the Greek Film Archive. Screening of the films "THE RED BALLOON " by Albert Lamoriche and "THE CROSSING OF THE SEINE " by Alex Joffé. On the front cover, after the credit and the awards won by the film, the note refers briefly to the biography and career of Albert Lamoriche as the creator of documentary films prior to shooting the trilogy "VIM", "CRIN BLANC" and "ΤHE RED BALLOON " that was to establish him in international cinema as one of the most sensitive film directors. Although these films seem to be directed to children, their appeal testifies to the exact opposite. The note then summarizes the film’s plot: the attempt of a six-year-old boy to save a balloon by perching on it forms the occasion for the development of a special relationship between them. A similar relationship is established between the boy and the horse in his following film: "CRIN BLANC" (THE WHITE HORSE). With the comment that "Lamoriche’s films are characterized by simplicity without rhetoric", the notes examines the film from a technical point of view: the shootings took place in the course of two months following a well-written script; the moves of the lens are very simple; the use of color is unique, as the film is divided in three parts. In the first, long and descriptive part, the colors are grey, setting off the red color of the balloon. In the second one, the scene of the chase is shot contre-lumieur, while the third one, the briefest of all, is surrounded by a golden sunlight. The note also contains the director’s own explanations regarding the symbolism of his selections in each part. The back cover bears a note on the film "THE CROSSING OF THE SEINE" by Alex Joffé, another film that draws its theme from World War II and narrates the story of a French patriot without howling, through a simple narrative. The film’s success is owed mostly to the excellent acting of Bourville, Gaby Morlais and Michelle Morgan. A reference to the acting style of the latter concludes the note.
