SATYAJIT RAY: 100th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
On the occasion of the 100th birthday of Satyajit Ray in 2022, the Greek Film Archive honors one of India’s greatest cinematic auteurs. The influence of Italian Neorealism bearing over his work is evident from his very first films, especially the “Apu Trilogy”, which we will be screened in our tribute. Ray showed the world that Indian Cinema is not confined to Bollywood. All three films in the trilogy are scored by Ravi Shankar. Ray moves effortlessly between India’s tradition and modernisation, and poses meaningful questions such as women’s standing in society, colonialism, the rigid structures and rules of India’s culture and society, postcolonialism and the effects of modernisation in India's culture and society.
Ray has transformed Indian cinema and has paved the way for the emergence of a new generation of Indian auteurs, such as Mira Nair, Shekar Kapur, Amit Dutta, Deepa Mehta.
