The programme gives a brief retrospective of the directorial career of Michael Powell before it goes on to an analysis of HONEYMOON (1959). It notes that even in this film, as in THE RED SHOES (1948), the viewer is transported to the world of ballet. Thematically, the film is about a former ballerina (the leading actress is a real-life virtuosa ballerina, Ludmilla Tcherina), “who is in Spain with her new husband, [and] is temped to go back on stage”. The programme concludes by commenting on the inferiority of HONEYMOON compared to THE RED SHOES, highlighting, however, the refreshing “charm of ballet and music”. Special reference is made to the wonderful music of Mikis Theodorakis.
